Save for your down payment

The traditional 20% down payment is back and it’s unlikely to change in the near future. If you have a price range in mind, calculate how much down payment you’ll need. Check your liquid savings and see how much you have relative to your target down payment. Remember that you’ll need additional funds for closing costs, moving expense, furniture, etc. If you have a long way to go toward your down payment goal, look for ways to cut expenses (e.g., forego the 88-inch HD TV and stick with the 44-inch) and move more of your income to savings.

Check your credit score

Use sites like to learn your credit score. Then increase your credit score by paying your bills on time, paying down outstanding balances and reducing the number of credit sources you have available.

Get pre-qualified

This is the most important step in preparing to buy a home. Getting pre-qualified will tell you how much you can realistically afford to pay for a home. It will also help you when it’s time to get your offer accepted by a seller. If you need a recommendation for a qualified lender, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Discuss your plans with a reputable silicon valley real estate agent

As your professional buyer’s agent, I track the local housing market on a daily basis and provide you with personalized recommendations and advice. I’m familiar with the homes for sale in Palo Alto, Atherton, Sunnyvale, Los Altos and all other Silicon Valley cities and towns, and I know their relative merits. The knowledge I bring to the search and negotiation process can save you money and time while alleviating frustration. My goal is to assist you in finding the home that best fits your needs in the most cost-effective and painless manner possible.

Get listing alerts by e-mail

Make looking for a home easy with regular e-mail alerts notifying you when properties matching your search criteria come to the market. As your search progresses, you can adjust these alerts to fine tune your search criteria.

Know the prime selling seasons

The Silicon Valley real estate market has two selling seasons that recur with remarkable regularity. The larger of the two is the spring selling season that kicks off after the Super Bowl and runs through June. This is when the bulk of homes are listed and sold during the year. The fall selling season ramps up after Labor Day and continues until Thanksgiving as kids are back in school and buyers re-focus on their housing search. Knowing these and other real estate trends will help you understand the best times for you to buy.

Keep an open mind

As a buyer, you need to be guided by your goals and dreams, not the hype and doom-and-gloom so often created by the media. While you must take broader economic forces into consideration, the decision to buy a home is based on your need for shelter, the desire to be more connected to your community and your long-term financial security. I look forward to serving as your Silicon Valley Realtor and assisting with your next home search!
